GYROTONIC®

Birch Branch

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® was developed by Juliu Horvath and includes both the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods. These approaches treat the body as one connected system, using smooth, flowing movements to improve mobility, strength, and overall function.

GYROKINESIS® is done on a mat or chair without equipment, while GYROTONIC® uses specialized machines to support fluid, joint-friendly movement. Both methods are suitable for all ages and abilities—from athletes to those recovering from injury—helping to build strength, flexibility, balance, and efficiency.

Juliu Horvath was born in 1942 in Timișoara, Romania. From a young age, he excelled in movement, including swimming, gymnastics, and rowing. He began studying dance at 19 and, by 21, became a principal dancer with the Romanian National Ballet. After defecting from Romania in 1970, he spent six months in a refugee camp in Italy before receiving political asylum in the United States and relocating to New York City, where he performed alongside renowned dancers such as Margot Fonteyn, Jacques d’Amboise, and Melissa Hayden.

Following a ruptured Achilles tendon while dancing with the Houston Ballet, Horvath shifted his focus to yoga, sparking a lifelong exploration of breath, movement, and meditation. In 1977, he moved to St. Thomas to deepen his practice and study the body’s natural patterns of movement and healing. He later returned to New York City, where he introduced “Yoga for Dancers,” the foundation for what would become the GYROTONIC® method.

"When you stop experimenting, you cannot grow" ~Juliu Horvath
